But if you listen to me, says the Lord, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but keep the sabbath day holy and do no work on it. Jeremiah 17. 19 - 27

In the OT reading appointed for today, God tells the people to observe the Sabbath, mark it as holy and do no work on it. This morning the word Sabbath popped out at me as a gift...the opportunity for rest is so life giving. In my Discipleship Group, we have a vow in which we say, "By God’s grace, I will honor Sabbath time in my daily life, recognizing the value of rest, renewal and delight remembering the commandment “to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy” (Exodus 20.8). We hold each other accountable to that vow, and I frequently recognize that I have not given myself Sabbath time each day.

Here in the 4th week in Lent, I might reflect on the temptation not to honor Sabbath time in my daily life, and instead be intentional about a time of rest, renewal and delight in each day. Will you join me?

If you want to delve more into Sabbath, I commend this book to you for self study or group study. It is a good one!
