Storms
The lake became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles,* they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, ‘It is I;* do not be afraid.’ Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land towards which they were going. John 6. 15-27
Another day this week, we read the Markan version of this story, and not surprisingly it was much shorter and more concise. Regardless however, this story is told in all the gospels but Luke, and we can conclude that it is an essential part of the theology of the gospels.
When I read it this morning, it reminded me of my theology in this way...
Jesus walking on the water, sees me in a storm tossed to and fro.
I am terrified of the storm and the vision.
They both appeared out of nowhere.
The calm in his voice soothes me.
and he takes me in his arms...
"and he walks with me and he talks to me and he tells me I am his own,
and the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known."
No storm is too great that our loving God cannot calm. If only we can remember and believe.
